I was lucky enough to visit this beautiful place 2 years ago – not a day goes by that I don’t think about my time in China. It’s been such an inspiration and I can’t wait to go back, hopefully soon!

The video starts with the Chinese technique to obtain porcelain clay, as described in one of the earliest manuscripts on pottery techniques, “Manufacture of Porcelain”, by Tang Ying (1745). The clay is pulverized by the hammers and made into bricks called “petuntse”.
Background information: I had the extraordinary opportunity of having hands-on experience with Jingdezhen porcelain, taught by local craftsmen, after receiving the Windgate Fellowship Award. I used it to explore the origins of porcelain, evaluating the qualities of Asian wares and studying the commonly used materials, designs and production techniques of craftsmen in Japan and China. I also participated in a six-week residency at The Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China’s porcelain capital.
