I’ve been working in my studio for the past months to get these milk mugs, cookie plates, and coffee cups ready for the summer. I love the way these are turning out, so over-the-top decorated with vintage decals, gold luster and Japanese patterns; a combination of Nostalgia and “Fernweh”, feelings all too familiar.

About a year ago I started my travels to two artist residency programs in the country and through social media I am now reminded of what a great time I had, both in Montana at The Archie Bray Foundation and in Colorado at Anderson Ranch. When I returned, right before Christmas, I had this urgency of “nesting”; organizing, re-organizing, and cleaning our apartment here in Kansas City and I decided not to travel extensively in 2017. A sense of Nostalgia, this “sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations” was what I was longing for, after not being in my own space, not with my family for such a long time. Of course my sentiment for my European heritage always plays a big role in my work and I am constantly reminded of my “German-ness” in my everyday life here in the US.

But of course, “Fernweh” has taken a hold of me again, seeing pictures of rainbows in Helena, MT, and memories of the first snow in Snowmass, CO. Yet I can’t shake the feeling of staying here at home just a little while longer before I give in to my “wanderlust” again…
